Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 20 February 2025
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is set to host Africa E-Mobility Week 2025 (AEW2025), scheduled for 16-18 September 2025. This landmark event, organised in partnership between the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics and the Africa E-Mobility Alliance (AfEMA), will bring together key stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, investors, and innovators, to accelerate Africa’s transition to
sustainable transport solutions.
The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ethiopian government and AfEMA underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to e-mobility leadership and innovation. AEW2025 will serve as a platform for high-level policy discussions, fostering public-private partnerships, and showcasing investment opportunities in electric mobility.
Why Ethiopia?
Ethiopia stands at the forefront of Africa’s transition to sustainable mobility, making it the ideal host for AEW2025. The country has enacted progressive policies to promote electric mobility, including:
- Ban on Importation of Fossil Fuel Vehicles: Ethiopia has implemented a comprehensive ban on second-hand internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and all vehicles powered by fossil fuels, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mobility.
- Green Transport Initiative: The government aims to electrify public transport and transition urban mobility towards clean energy solutions.
- Investment in Renewable Energy: Ethiopia’s vast hydropower resources provide a sustainable and cost-effective energy source to power e-mobility, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
- Public Transport Electrification & EV Charging Infrastructure: Recent efforts to introduce electric buses and expand EV charging infrastructure demonstrate the country’s commitment to supporting electric mobility at scale. Investments in charging networks ensure a seamless transition for electric vehicles, making Ethiopia a regional leader in e-mobility adoption.
These initiatives position Ethiopia as a leader in e-mobility innovation, paving the way for increased investment and collaboration at AEW2025.
A Milestone for Africa’s E-Mobility Agenda
Hon. Bareo Hassen Bareo, State Minister for the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics, emphasised the importance of hosting AEW2025, stating: “Ethiopia is proud to host AEW2025 as part of our broader efforts to champion green transport solutions. This event will showcase Ethiopia’s leadership in sustainable mobility and create meaningful opportunities for collaboration with key industry players across Africa and beyond. We look forward to welcoming stakeholders to Addis Ababa to shape the future of transport on our continent.”
Similarly, Warren Ondanje, Managing Director of AfEMA, highlighted the impact of this collaboration:
“This partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics is a significant step towards realising Africa’s e-mobility potential. Ethiopia’s commitment to sustainable mobility, including bold policy measures like restricting certain fossil fuel vehicle imports, sets a strong precedent for the rest of the continent. AEW2025 will serve as a catalyst for new policies, partnerships, and investments to accelerate Africa’s clean transport future.”
